] According to my edition of Mansfield Park, a ha-ha is a sunken fence, wall, or other boundary of a garden or park that is purposely made so it won't obstruct the scenic view.

Weren't they meant to keep cows or other livestock off off the lawn? And can anyone comment on when they came into vogue---I think it had to do with pseudo-pastoral landscaping styles. I recall vaguely that in the play "Arcadia" hahas are discussed.
