I'm with you on the ball idea.
I've been to a couple of events a la Austen. Check out the web site below, which will take you to An Evening with Jane Austen, an event put on by the Lively Arts Historical Association (LAHA) in Southern California.
It was well attended, with plenty (if that's ever possible) of men.
