One of those "baby" things?

I recently viewed the 1980's BBC version of Emma with Doran Godwin again, and was totally baffled by something she does: She is apparently feeding(or doing something with) her sister Isabella's little girl in the nursery. Knightley knocks on the door, and she carefully puts away a couple of implements on the table, then tells Knightley he may come in. What's she hiding?
