The great thesis-who-must-be-obeyed is claiming me too much at the moment - this is just to say thank you for all the information, I knew you could answer my questions!
But wasn't it Bulwer-Lytton who started the whole black gents' dress suits thing in the mid-C19th, with a novel whose name I have forgotten, but which featured a hero who wore only black for a typically heroic Deep Secret Reason?
