] I have a question on the kind of jobs that would be considered by high ranking men in society. Like, Mr. Darcy. What was his occupation? Did he work at all or was it inherited? Would a lawyer be high-class job?
JA uses all of the acceptable occupation in her novels: army, navy, clergy, landowner (the major occupation). The law is a special case; solicitors, are considered to be in trade at this point in time because they collect fees. Barristers, trial lawyers are gentlemen since the solicitors ask for their fees for them. Some members of the gentry also worked in merchant banks (JA's brother, Henry), journalism (black sheep) and the higher levels of the civil service.
