In response to £10,000 minus a bit, written by Caroline on July 25, 1998 at 00:21:39

To L and T index ] How much income tax would Mr Darcy have paid on his £10,000 a year? How was such tax calculated? And how was it paid- annually, quarterly, or what?

I'm not positive, but I don't think there was an income tax like we have today. Instead there were taxes on almost everything else you can think of, like the window tax, which taxed a house owner a certain amount per window in his house, the infamous tea tax (and on other imports), Pitt's hair powder tax. Just as a guess, there was probably some sort of property tax, so someone with a large estate like Mr. Darcy would pay some hefty fees.

No doubt you were hoping someone who actually knew what she was talking about would respond to your question! Sorry! I'll do some checking in a few books I have and try to get back with some more definite info.
