In response to Army--commisions and resigning, written by Anna P on July 22, 1998 at 17:35:10
The process was known as 'Sending in your Papers', and could indeed be quick. At that time, and theoretically still, the status of a comissioned offficer was very different from that of an employee. The rankers and noncoms were paid a merces--wages, the comissioned officers were and are in theory in the personal service of the Sovereign, and were (are) paid an honorarium, not wages but maintenance by the King. An officer could not be made to serve, and could therefore resign at will.
- Fascinating...thank you! nfm Anna P 09:30:30 7/23/98 (0)
