This is my first contribution to this discussion group, or any in the Repbblic of Pemberley. I have enjoyed the site very much and feel that it may be time to give something back to the discussion. In reference to your question about parsons and doctors, I believe that the degree in question is the D.D., or Doctor of Divinity. This is a very old degree, far older than the D.Phil. and Ph.D. mentioned by Linden. Divinity and theology were subjects thought worthy of university study long before most other disciplines were. A Doctor of Divinity would have the same theological training as a minister who was not a parson, but would have studied beyond that to achieve the D.D. I hope that this helps you.
