I suppose somewhere along the line it became acceptable for ladies to actually try to move about in the water and exert themselves--though she wore a hat and was very careful not to get her head wet.
This probably happened about the same time as they stopped trying to wear heavy wool dresses..........;-)
In Sanditon (the completed version) don't the two women go off and bathe in the sea and jump up and down?
