Miniature books?

I remember reading somewhere about small books men and women alike would carry--they might have been journals, of a sort, but I'm not certain. Does anyone know anything about this? From what I remember, they latched closed, perhaps even tied. My grandfather inherited two Bibles of this nature that date from the mid-1800's, but I'm looking for something during the Regency, or a bit earler. I know these minibooks had a specific name, but naturally that name escapes me now!
