I got the same impression when reading the book for the same reasons you did. Let's hope that God, in his mercy, didn't want any children to have to live through having a mother as silly as Lydia! (Of course, it didn't work that way for the Bennet girls, now did it??? Still, Mr. B. was a far cry better than Mr. W, imo)
