Forgot to mention the "family bed" which I assume would have been more prevalent in the less well-off families that couldn't afford lots of furniture. I wonder if there's a certain amount of status in having separate bedrooms, separate beds?
Apparently the "family bed" is coming back in style, because my friend who is going the natural parenting route with her daughter practices this. Everyone is in one bed, parents, baby, kids until they want their own beds, etc. The argument in favor is that this allows the mother to breastfeed at night without disturbing everyone's sleep cycle.
