Two questions: chariots and powder

Given the expertise on travel so many people seem to have, could you satisfy my curiosity on this point? In one of the posts I made a while back on Ruskin, I quoted his description of a travelling chariot - now, what exactly is a chariot? How does it relate to coaches, phaetons, et al? (maybe we need a family tree for wheeled vehicles)
My second question comes from reading Nicholas Nickleby written 1838-9, which features many elderly gentlemen with powdered hair. Does anyone know the dates for powdering - when did it come in, when did it go out, and when did old men stop having powdered hair?
