In the movie "Mrs. Brown" (which is very good, by the way), Queen Victoria takes her granddaughters swimming. They show exactly what is meant by bathing houses--at least of this era, but I was surprised to see Victoria actually swimming, and not just getting herself wet. I suppose somewhere along the line it became acceptable for ladies to actually try to move about in the water and exert themselves--though she wore a hat and was very careful not to get her head wet.
