To L and T index I am writing a Regency-era historical and need a character to pick something up from the desk and slip it into her pocket--preferably something weapon-like.

The first thing that popped into my mind was a pen knife. This was a tiny blade that folded and I think a gentleman would carry it in his pocket but I am sure they would keep one handy at a desk, too. They used it to trim the quills into a nib suitable for writing. When folded, they are only about 2-2 1/2 inches long.
