A Gentleman's Desk

I am done with lurking and have ventured to post my first question. It deals with the everday items that might be on a gentleman's desk. I am writing a Regency-era historical and need a character to pick something up from the desk and slip it into her pocket--preferably something weapon-like. My first thoughts were of a letter opener, but I don't believe they were in abundance during this time ;-) My profuse thanks for any and all assistance.
