To L and T indexThe other occupation to a destitute female of gentle birth was as a paid companion to another lady. The stereotype of this occupation was a young lady looking after an elderly one, mostly by reading to her, sitting with her and talking with her, accompanying her on social calls, etc., shopping for her, fetching and carrying, etc., etc. She might also perform secretarial duties such as taking care of correspondence, especially dictation.
