] I've been on some ships at historical sites and it must have been grim. At Mystic Seaport we were told that whaling ships often were at sea for 2-5 years before returning home. I suppose an intrepid wife would rather go along and be uncomfortable than be left alone.
} Does that mean that children were born on the ship? Poor things! They could have been 5 before they ever stood on dry land.
