] I have nothing on which I can base this assumption, but I am sure that the self conscious custom of young ladies keeping journals which they addressed as "dear diary" has to be a late 19C phenomenon at the earliest? It seems so out of place.
I cringe at that bit too, for the same reason, but I have no idea whether they did it or not....
