Ack! Balls and Billiards

Since my heroine, Cassandra has, in her ignorance, already irrevocably ruined convention by placing her host in the horrid position of being unable to open the ball, I have just learned from Liz that she's struck once more...that billiard tables per se had no pockets at all, that scores were tallied in a weird way...can any of you Brits please enlighten me as to how horrid a historical blunder I have committed by having her play "pool" in 1812??
I would greatly appreciate seeing the error of my ways...
