Servants Accomodations

I have another question for you or whomever. Did the servants actually live in the house of the Master?
Others will probably be able to supply more details than I, but from what I have gathered here and there, some servants lived in and some would have their quarters in a separate building (but still within the estate). It did vary from family to family and according to income, I'm sure. I think that I have heard that the cook often had a room near the kitchen, but sometimes the cook lived outside of the estate and just came to prepare the meals. The butler had his own set of rooms. Maids were usually tucked in the upper story or garret.
