The original discussion stemmed from the Persuasion film, at the end of which we see Anne aboard Wentworth's ship. Although this was an invention of the screenwriter, the book did have the example of the Admiral and his wife, and there was discussion about her experiences at sea.
I've been on some ships at historical sites and it must have been grim. At Mystic Seaport we were told that whaling ships often were at sea for 2-5 years before returning home. I suppose an intrepid wife would rather go along and be uncomfortable than be left alone.
