A common term for young women, God knows why.
Georgette Heyer got a great deal of her information on this topic from a work called Life in London by Pierce Egan, which was published in 1821 and includes wonderful pictures by Cruikshank as well as text full of slang. It is a bit hard to find, but a university library might be of assistance.
