Macadam roads

For an interesting reason. Th iron wheels of a wagon crushed and compacted the graded stones of which a Macadamised road was constructed. Rubber tyres create a vacuum under their tread and suck out the dust and fines which hold the surface together. The first solution was to spray the macadam toads with tar--hence Tarmacadam or Tarmac!
