Country roads and their portrayal in adaptations

Posted by Ian on July 04, 1998 at 21:12:22:

To L and T indexI was just wondering about how country roads and lanes are portrayed in various period drama adaptations. I realise this is not conducive to character or plot development but when one of my colleagues at work constantly says he cannot watch the various series due to the incorrect portrayal of roads it can be a little disturbing. Then again I did mention "he". ;-)

Apparently country lanes we see about us (those who are fortunate to see such things at any rate ;-) ) are the product of the motor vehicle age. I'd actually have to concur with my colleague for when one sees roads heavily used by cattle viz. dairy herds etc. these roads are extremely muddy and well, they don't look like roads but a wide path. Hmmmm. :-|
