Lady Catherine was Lady Jane's younger sister, so she was the "next" in line to the throne after Elizabeth under Henry VIII's will (provided Elizabeth left no heirs). Therefore Queen Mary had decreed that both Catherine and her younger sister, Mary, should never marry. Catherine secretly married Edward Seymour, the eldest son of Lord Hertford, and got in a great deal of trouble for it. The marriage was declared invalid, although she bore him two sons.
