There were numerous medicinal terms during this period which encompassed many different meanings, the ague, being one of them.
I recently found out that the word "consumption" was used to refer to any disease that "consumed" the body, not just tuberculosis, but cancer and even asthma, and probably any like disease that was not then identified.
