How did they get home?
My guess is that traveling by "post" was relatively rare, even for wealthy people.... an additional question for me has always been "what did they do for horses once they had arrived at their destination, where they planned to spend some time?"
Also, if you're doing research on the costs of travel, there were numerous tolls to pay at turnpikes and bridges. I know that at one time parishes were responsible for maintaining their own roads, but I do not know if the parish collected the tolls, though I THINK in some cases roads were acutally built and maintained by private companies, but again I don't have any specific information.
Can anyone shed some more light on this?
