Marriages in C of E churches

I'm pretty sure that I've read that up until some time in the 19th century (don't know the exact year) all Christians, including dissenters and Catholics, had to be married in Church of England churches...
I did a quick on-line search, but could only find http://www.idea.edu/courses/general/gen/201/gen201_5.htm which doesn't tell the year that this ended (unless it was with "civil registration" in 1837...)
