Post horses

The horses and vehicles did not belong to the mail but were contracted to the Post Office by private contractors. The system operated rather like Avis now--you could leave a post horse at any posting inn and pick up another. Another form of travel worth mentioning is canal travel by fast boats. The could ride their own bow wave and travel at the speed of a galloping horse.
