] I am desperately clawing through my research material and text books to find the date on which Lord Castlereagh became Foreign Secretary. I know the year was 1812.] Can anyone help?
According to _The Chronology of British History_ by Alan and Veronica Palmer (London: Century, 1992), he became Foreign Secretary on 4 March 1812. It notes that he succeeded Lord Wellesley (who had been the Foreign Secretary since 1809), who resigned in protest over what he perceived to be the government's lukewarm support of his brother, Wellington, in the Peninsula.
