Wow, this info is fabulous! I have an ancestor who emigrated from Britain to Missouri (USA) sometime before 1836, and he was a member of the Royal College of Surgeons. I have never been able to find a good source to explain exactly what that meant!
Also, I have tried to figure out-- on some censuses he says he was born in England, and on others, he says Scotland. I have wondered why, if he was born in Scotland, he didn't go to school in Edinburgh, which at that time I understand was the best place to go to study medicine. But I have a letter from a distant relative claiming that he wrote to the Royal College of Surgeons, and that they had records of his education and certification there. (I haven't yet written to the College myself.)
Anyway, thanks very much for the wealth of info-- and now I have a source to search!
