In Mrs, Beeton's Book of Household Management first published in 1859 she had this to say about chocalate and
"Chocolate has always been a fovourite beverage among the Spaniards and Creoles, and was considered her as a great luxury when first introduced, after the discovery of America; but the high duties laid upon it, confined it long almost entirely to the wealthier classes. Before it was subjected to duty, Mr. Bryan Edwards stated that cocoa plantations were numerous.... The removal of this duty has increased their cultavation."
There is no mention of when the duty was removed, so I dont know if the price would have dropped by the early 1800's or not.
