We did exactly that with my Great grandmother in 1985. We have a 90 minute tape of her talking about her family. My mother did the recording and had a family photograph that they could refer to and my great grandmother went through her brothers and sisters individually. Mostly what we got was family gossip but I am so glad we have this invaluable record. She died a couple of years later so if we hadn't have done it then we wouldn't have had it at all!
Last Christmas I decided that it would be nice for everyone to have a copy of what she said so I spent hours transcribing the 90 minute tape, word for word! It was well worth it though as everyone was overjoyed with their little bit of this remarkable woman.
I'm now trying to get my Grandmothers to do the same sort of thing, and also anyone else in the family.....I would love for us to build up an entire family history, it really would be something for those who come after us!
