We had this query a few weeks ago and the consensus was that married women and spinsters generally wore caps, although it was neither required nor universal. Jane Austen began wearing one at age 23, perhaps as a signal that she was resigned to remaining unmarried. Or she may have had with hairdressing trouble and expense, a not-unlikely scenario because she became more and more impoverished as her life went on.
