To L and T indexThis doesn't really answer your question, but I posted this on the Ramble board when recommending Emily Eden's The Semi-Attached Couple (written early 1830s):

In the book, a young woman staying with her aristocratic neighbors writes to her mother to ask permission to read novels.

and do you object to my reading novels, if Lady Eskdale says there is no harm in them? They look very tempting, particularly one called Pride and Prejudice.

Also, I think one of the points JA makes in Northanger Abbey is that everyone pretends to scorn novels, but they read them anyway! (male and female alike, but it is considered more of a woman thing - sort of like romance novels today). But of course, Henry Tilney in NA freely admits that he loves novels.
