] Thanks for the link.It produced this;

] First large-scale grinding of cocoa beans 1795. Does this mean the Austens bought the beans ready-roasted and ground?

] First chocolate bar 1847. First dutched cocoa 1828.

] Still, it's interesting!

btw, back to chocolate chips from a previous post...Not only did they not have baking soda, they didn't have chocolate chips!!! I forget exactly when the first ones were made, but the story goes like this: A woman had a recipe for cookies that called for melted chocolate. She bought the chocolate in a bar (not a candy bar, just a baking bar), and melted it over the stove. One day, she didn't have enough time to melt it, because of some crisis or other, so she just chopped it with a knife and mixed the pieces in with the cookie dough, thinking that in the heat of the oven, the pieces would melt and make them like always. They didn't, so we have chocolate chip cookies. And the place where she lived?--a Toll House, so we get "Nestle's Toll House Morsels"! Cute, huh? :-)
