Susan, in the bibliography is a book by Brian Lavery which is part of a series called Conway's History of the Ship , available at Bookserve. This series is for ship-lovers in general. Offhand I cannot remember which ones, if any, in the series, concentrate on commercial shipping rather than on naval warfare- it tends to be all mixed up together.They are expensive books, so it might be an idea to see if you can get them from, or via, your library first.
The publisher in U.K, the Conway Maritime Press, specialises in books on maritime matters (surprise! )and my guess is, if anyone could contact them, they might be able to suggest something specially tailored for you.
