Polecats, Poison Ivy and other hazards....

Caroline or HC, you may be able to help me.
I need what type of pest polecats are. The dictionary says that it has been Americanized to mean the same as a skunk. But I think it is more like a ferret. Would it bite or attack for any reason? Also, are poison ivy or poison oak specifically American plants? If so, is there a counterpart in England?
Thanks,
Cathy
