I think there was another reason -- if you have ever done any ballroom dancing (as opposed to what people call "dancing" in this day and age), you 've probably noticed that one's hands can get a bit sweaty, especially if one is dancing in a warm room. Gloves provide the necessary friction that enables a gentleman to keep ahold of his partner's hand, particularly during a fast dance!
