To L and T indexEarl Fitzwilliam was interesting politically. As Lord Lieutenant of Yorkshire he was responsible for putting down the Luddites, which he did, in no uncertain terms.

Yet some years later, after the Peterloo massacre, he organised a meeting to request a parliamentary inquiry into what went wrong, and was promptly forced to resign as LL.
