As a Canuck, thanks for mentioning Laura Secord (she had a cow, it's a long story! but no chocolate)
I did find out that the first chocolate house (like a coffee house) was opened in London in 1657. I believe it was served without milk.

Put your corset back on! the rich could certainly have afforded chocolate. Though it appears that it was thought that it was a more suitable drink for men.
