Regency Styles vs. Crinolines (Funny Scan)

Posted by JennieC on May 28, 1998 at 15:35:26:

To L and T indexI recently stumbled across a copy of The Wonderful World of Ladies' Fashion: 1850-1920, edited by Joseph J. Schroeder, Jr. In it are tons of fashion plates, as you would expect, but there are also scads of satirical cartoons poking fun at women's fashion. I howled my way through the book and thought other Pemberley folk might enjoy some of the things I've scanned.

For starters, here is a cartoon of two ladies comparing their fashionable dresses with a portrait of a Regency belle:

Caption: "Arabella Maria: 'Only to think, Julia, that our dear Mothers wore such ridiculous fashions as these!'

Both: 'Ha! ha! ha! ha!'"
