Wedding rings in wedding cakes

To L and T indexThis was part of a post by Patricia Bingham:
Wedding ring:
A syllabub is prepared for the May feast, which is made of warm milk from the cow, sweet cake and wine; and a kind of divination is practised, by fishing with the ladle for a wedding ring, which is dropped into it, for the purpose of prognosticating who shall be first married.

Now, I don't know what is it like in other countries, but it is customary in Argentina to put a "wedding ring" and other "tokens" in the wedding cake. The ring and tokens are all tied to a lace. Before serving the cake, all single women in the party pull the laces. The one to get the "wedding ring" is the one to be first married.

Do you think there might be a connexion between this custom and the May feast one?

Just curious...
