Gentlemen DO wear gloves

] In P&P2, gentlemen doesn't wear gloves and ladies sometimes do es and sometimes doesn't. For instance, at the assemblies ball, Jane and Lizzy are wearing them, but not Lydia or Kitty. Which were the critieria followed?
Gentlemen were supposed to wear gloves to dance- there's a bit in The Watsons where one young gentleman uses it as an excuse to return to the ballroom.
Frederick Wentworth uses the same excuse to go back and make sure Anne ses his letter............
