To L and T indexCaroline,

I don't think this is exactly what you are looking for, but has anyone read THE MOTHER TONGUE: ENGLISH AND HOW IT GOT THAT WAY by Bill Bryson? I bought this book when it came out in hardcover about eight years ago and it was one of the most fascinating books I have ever read. Bryson has done incredible research on the evolution of words and speech patterns. The book came out in paperback last year, I think, and can be had for about $12. It is also a library favorite.

IMHO, however, there are one or two points on which I think he misses the boat, particularly on the topic of how British English translated into the US's southern and Appalachian speech patterns, but I am no linguist and would love to hear someone else's take on this book. Anyone?

Do read it if you get an opportunity.
