] Bluing is a blue liquid used to make whites seem whiter. According to the dictionary it counteracts the tendency for some white fabrics (especially linen) to turn yellow.
A theater lighting designer or a color theorist would tell you that yellow and blue cancel eachother and make white. They are complimentary colors. This is the same theory by which blue-haired ladies came about. By using a bluing agent on white hair, it removes the look of yellowness. Some people are less careful than others and use too much resulting in blue hair.
