For they 'as wot an't not 'ad the benefit of no linguistic eddycation, John, is there a book or a website that you might be a-knowin' of wot deals with this kind of matter? Preferably one that can be got by inter-library loan by the village library in Tuktayuktuk, or Coober Pedy, not one that simply moulders away behind locked doors in the basement of a university library somewhere, only to be referred to by grovelling written application, six months in advance?
Seriously, the whole question of speech evolution, accent, and grammar used by Jane Austen and demonstrated in adaptations of her work is one that comes up continually in the conversations of Pemberley, and reference to a scholarly source would be very handy.
