To L and T index Linden, most of the Guilds were of craftsmen of various types, people who manufactured a product- Goldsmiths, carpenters, weavers, etc. As John W points out,the terms "Merchant" and "Manufacturer" are two different things, aand although they don't have to be exclusive, I think that by the time you get to 1800, there is a fair chance that someone who made goods on the scale requiredof Mr Gardiner's wealth, would probably not be selling his products to the public as well.
