'Warehouse' in Jane Austen's age was used rather like 'emporium' today, wasn't it. You could shop at a warehouse; it was literally a place to show off wares. That means they wouldn't necessarily have been near the river. I'm not sure if the River could have been seen from Gracechurch Street; I am sure that you can't see it these days!
